About SUKIMONO
Based in the small town of Gotsu, Shimane, SUKIMONO works in close relationship with local nature and culture, cultivating people, objects, and places that can be passed on to the next generation. Founded in 2012, we are now in our 14th year.
We approach our work through four perspectives—Architecture, Objects, Materials, and Hospitality. From a small town in Japan, we explore new possibilities for society and give form to moments that move the human spirit.
Our Work
Architecture
We design and build architecture and interiors for accommodations, restaurants, shops, and residences, from small repairs to large-scale renovations, always valuing regional materials and context.
Objects
Through our in-house workshop, we create one-of-a-kind furniture, fixtures, products, and art objects using primarily solid natural materials.
Materials
By reclaiming materials from traditional houses and utilizing satoyama resources, we engage deeply with the origins of making and create cycles of reuse and regeneration.
Hospitality
In Arifuku Onsen, where hot springs have flowed for over 1,300 years, we operate three lodging facilities, creating stay-based experiences that encourage learning, exchange, and diverse ways of living in a depopulated region.
Our Place
Gotsu City, surrounded by sea, mountains, and rivers, is the least populated city in Shimane Prefecture.
Rooted in its natural and cultural heritage, we address regional challenges through architecture, furniture, and objects that foster lasting attachment.
We believe the future of small towns depends on open exchange beyond borders of age and place.
By creating places to stay and learn together, we shape work driven by inner motivation rather than excessive rationalism.
