rin art association is pleased to present “Fiction beyond the Real,” a solo exhibition by Kumi Kaguraoka.
Kumi Kaguraoka has been focusing on the interface between society and the body, and has been exploring new “images of the body” that emerge from this interface.
In “Pick the Light,” she questioned our passive trust in the visual and reexamined our relationship with the world by making the act of “seeing” itself conscious. In “Metamorphosis of Beautiful Bodies,” she attempted to decipher the relationship between the body and beauty from multiple angles, starting from the universal desire to "obtain beauty.”
Through these works, Kaguraoka arrived at the fundamental questions of “What is the real (reality) that we have believed in?” and "How are these values, common sense, and other information constructed and acted upon by us?”
This exhibition, “Fiction beyond the Real,” is an attempt to explore the space between fiction (imagination) and the real (reality). Fiction and the Real are not dichotomous in nature, but always permeate each other, coming and going.
For example, ancient Greek temple architecture and sculptures, religious paintings in Catholic churches, myths, and the Bible, art used to function as a "device to transform fiction into reality. The stories told eventually took root in people's minds as real, becoming part of their collective unconscious and forming the basis of their aesthetic sense and sense of values.
“The ‘reality’ we have believed in and seen is not ‘truth’ but ‘fiction’. If information such as values and common sense have been constructed by being shared by the collective unconscious, then we can make any fiction a reality. “
ー Kumi Kaguraoka
This exhibition is an attempt to shake up the structure of the real that we have unconsciously believed in through the fictions that Kaguraoka “tells with a straight face,” and is a prototype for a new reality. It gently brings to light the “faint contours” that lurk between you and the world and that have yet to be put into words.
Please come and explore the exhibition.
■ Artist statement
Born to the parents who are medical professionals, I had a strong interest in the “body” since I was a child.
With a background in fashion and design, I see the body not as a mere physical entity, but as “an important tool for interacting with the world through one’s senses” a medium that connects the inner and outer worlds.
My work takes form through repeated research and prototyping, and then cycles into further exploration through my artwork and through dialogue with others.
Through this process, I confront fundamental human desires and the relationship between the individual and society, sometimes questioning them, and sometimes attempting to deepen them.
By bringing such “non-visible things” to light and presenting new values, perspectives, and thoughts that emerge, I hope to create a small starting point for expanding and re-comprehending our own existence and perceptions.
