This work is based on a scene I witnessed on my way back from visiting Mount Awagatake, which lies on the border between Kamo City and Sanjo City in Niigata. Against the overcast sky, the mountain range appeared strangely matte and flat—almost like a “fake” set of mountains.
The contrast left a strong impression on me: mountains without depth, a straight path between rice fields, and rows of square buildings in the distance, set against plants that swayed organically in the wind.
I depict mountains as a symbol of my longing for an “unchanging landscape”—something I envy, having grown up in a city where everything shifts and transforms so quickly.
The subtitle text was sampled from the 1995 television anime Neon Genesis Evangelion, Episode 1 (“Angel Attack”).
