French illustrator Simon Landrein’s first solo exhibition in Japan, “Private Browsing,” is now on view!

This exhibition brings together new paintings, art prints, sculptures, animations, and more. Known for his bold graphic style and sharp, biting humor, Simon creates works centered on the theme of the “body.” For him, the body is both a subject to be depicted and a source of tension and unease. The figures in his works are simply stylized, sometimes distorted, and depicted as snapshots of a single moment. Though they appear in seemingly ordinary, everyday scenes, the use of color and composition creates condensed scenes where the characters’ gestures and relationships feel all the more striking. And as the viewer looks more closely, the works evoke a sense of wonder. Large-scale paintings are displayed in the venue, serving as the focal point of the entire space. In addition, smaller works and tapestries based on comics are exhibited, allowing visitors to enjoy a rhythmic visual experience. These works feature Simon’s signature storytelling, where the meaning of a scene shifts with the slightest change in movement or expression. On the screens, visitors can also experience the wide range of his work as an animation artist.
