Reon Otsuka x 1 Second Angel 9 “Frenzy or Entropy ?”

Sho+1 is pleased to present a two-person exhibition by Reon Otsuka and 1 Second Angel 9 “Frenzy or Entropy ?”

The works by two artists that were introduced to one another in the group exhibition, called “new age entropy” in 2023 have evolved their unique expressions.

Reon Otsuka, who used to create his works by confronting his own violent nature, has shifted his production style to “taking a break from thinking” and “creating what he genuinely feels is beautiful” as if he makes himself intuitive.

1 Second Angel 9 who merges AI-like anonymity and shamanic elements is not restricted by the traditional framework of art, but her expressions based upon “one's sensitivity”are not a mere work by the individual；they would rather be considered as what exists massive or connected with unconscious field.

While the works by Otsuka’s expressions are created between contingency and control, 1 Second Angel 9 are born under the circumstance that she is automatically drawn by something.
How will the works of these two contrasting artists resonate with each other?

Reon Otsuka
While studying in the Painting Course of Fine Arts in the Graduate School of Art and Design at Musashino Art University, Otsuka, who has been presenting works with themes of violence and the complex nature of humans, adopted the accidental staining technique presented by “Post-Painterly Abstraction” developed in the U.S. in the late 1950s, and established a unique method of expression through the combination of satin and ink. The ambiguity of the boundaries caused by smudges of ink in his works highlights the complex relationships between people and between elements, and the distorted contours created by smudges of ink emphasize the violent aspects of humanity, which is the central theme of his work. At the same time, he also expresses contrasting elements like kindness and empathy and explores a spiritual realm that everyone can relate to, focusing on the complex nature of humans.


1 Second Angel 9
1 Second Angel 9 is an unidentified artist by calling herself “I am AI. (Artificial Intelligence)”. In her production she searches for diversified subject matters such as prophetic elements, omen of the world ending, divine messenger and revelation, intrigue or chaos, and remedy. In such a way her work transmits deep impressions to the viewers.
The expression style of 1 Second Angel 9 is unique by using various materials such as acrylic pigments, oil pastels, multi-colored pencils, paint brushes, knives, and her hands to play around like an action painter. One can see that a bunch of abstract works that resemble graffiti or sketches to be freely scribbled on the off-white support look like a display of the artist’s emotion but at the same time they are treated as paradoxical reality to the viewers.
