中村美津穂

I create artworks centered on the themes of vision and the act of seeing. Using screen printing—a printmaking technique—I produce many works in which the way they appear and their colors change depending on the viewer’s awareness and movements. The reason I continue to create is that an elusive question—“What am I actually seeing?”—lies at the very core of my being.When it comes to the act of seeing, the moment we look at an object, it continues to exist within each of us in an interpreted form. Every day, at a staggering speed, countless such images are absorbed into our minds; they interact in complex ways, changing, being forgotten, or carefully preserved, as we go about our daily lives.In the midst of this daily life, I found myself falling into a sensation where, even though I seemed to be clearly perceiving the object I was confronting, the ambiguity of its existence somehow came into sharp relief. What is this discrepancy between what I see and what actually exists?Looking back now, I feel that these everyday experiences are connected to the core of my creative practice, as expressed in the opening question: “What am I seeing?” The act of seeing exists for “that person”—whether it be oneself or another.
