At the rin art association , a vertical journey exploring the aesthetic sensibility of painter Tsuyoshi Higashijima. The exhibition “Into the Sky – Painting Paradiso” is being held.

この度、rin art association では東島毅の個展「そらにいく — Painting Paradiso」を開催いたします。
東島は［曖昧な美徳］をテーマとして絵画制作を行っています。［美］と異なり［美德］とは揺れ動く心の有り様を表します。 絵画は状況によって変わりゆく心を表す鏡として機能します。美的価値観は歴史が証明するようにその時々の環境と、そこに存在する人の意識により変化していきます。 心を仮固定にすることで、人は自身の意識の中で起こる変化を敏感に察知することができ、新たな［美］を創出することが可能になります。 東島の絵画は身体と空間の対峙から生まれ、変わりゆく刹那的な空気を描くことで作品には場と時の記憶が宿ります。 それらの絵画は時間を交差させながら螺旋を辿るように展開していきます。 刹那的でありながら、東島の作品には幾年もの記憶や感情が内包され、鑑賞者の意識と同調していくことで、［美］とは移ろいゆくものであることを認識させます。 今展では、3フロアのギャラリースペースの構造を用いて鑑賞者を空に誘う垂直の旅を演出します。 1階に立つのは、Guardian Spirit——守護する精神としての絵画は重力と身体の格闘から生まれ、その痕跡を刻んだ大作が空間を占有します。 2階に展示される作品は、色彩の中に光が滲み、その向こうに何かが見えるような気配が漂います。そして空間のどこかに、一本の糸が現れます。それは蜘蛛の糸か、雲の糸か。あるいは空へと続く階段か。救済なのか、問いかけか。 そして、3階の自然光の中の絵画は重力を完全に手放し、空へと解放されていきます。 階を上るごとに絵画は地から空へと移行し、やがて「描かれたもの」から「存在する状態」へと変容します。 東島は“その場所こそが、Painting Paradisoである。”と言います。 自身の心に静かに問いかけながら、それぞれの［美］の定義を再考していただく機会になりましたら幸いです。

ARTISTS INFORMATION
東島 毅
Artist, b. 1960
Born in 1960 in Takeo City, Saga Prefecture. Currently resides in Okayama City. Higashijima’s work is characterized by large canvases that seem to envelop the viewer, multi-layered and profound colors dominated by deep navy and silver tones, and a physicality evident in the scribbled words and symbols. The images that emerge from the artist’s gestures and take shape evoke calligraphy; they exist as a reality filtered through the artist’s thoughts—such as the flickering of light and air, water creeping across the ground, and the interplay between sky and earth—all of which the artist has sensed firsthand. At the same time, they present a relationship between the painting, the space, and the viewer. The term “Ambiguous Virtue,” a theme the artist has explored for over 30 years, expresses the artist’s belief that there is a certain grace in capturing the fleeting, impermanent manifestations of form—which are inherently elusive—in a painting. In recent years, the artist has been creating paintings that incorporate Eastern sensibilities and cultural contexts—such as the uncertain nature of life—into the texture and details of the materials, thereby constructing works that accept these phenomena as they are.
