MAKI Gallery is pleased to announce When You Come Home, a major solo exhibition by Brooklyn-based artist Susumu Kamijo, marking his notable return to Tennoz following his last solo showcase there three years prior. Since 2014, Kamijo has taken on poodles as his primary subject, delving into diverse applications of form, color, composition, and texture in painting with his chosen motif as the gateway for exploration.

In contrast to the artist’s previous works, which often depicted poodles in outdoor scenes with substantial negative space in the background, the creatures featured in this show are arranged within neatly divided indoor spaces. This new body of work also comprises a broader spectrum of colors as well as more subjects, such as birds, cats, and fish. By adding extra layers of detail to his paintings, Kamijo engages with the emotions and desires that lie deep within his soul, allowing him to contemplate what he truly wants to create as he strives to break free of his artistic patterns and propensities. We invite you, through this exhibition, to witness the many new creations born from the artist’s profound dialogue with himself.
