Galerie Tokyo Humanité is pleased to present Murai Shingo's solo exhibition entitled TOKINOSU—Black Inside. This exhibition will showcase a new series of sculptures following his previous series Black Solid in 2009 in which the surface of granite was carved according to a grid pattern. In the new series TOKINOSU, the rock surface is rough with drill marks left behind from the stone-splitting process. However, a closer look reveals that the surface has been finely chipped away, and the color and texture of the rock surface is different from that of the original rock surface when the stone was broken. Murai’s interest in the inside of stone becomes connected a different view which we have never seen in his works.

Born in Oita, Japan in 1952, Murai received M.A. in Sculpture at Tama Art University in Tokyo in 1978. His museum exhibitions include MURAI Shingo: Black Solid/Resealing (2016, Contemporary Art Museum Ise, Mie, Japan), Artist File 2009 The NACT Annual Show of Contemporary Art (2009, The National Art Center, Tokyo) and MURAI Shingo: Stones on Thinking (Oita Art Museum, Japan) among others.
