Otherwise Gallery is pleased to announce Tama Kubota solo exhibition “Tama Mino Pottery.”

Tama Kubota has developed a unique visual language that freely transcends the boundaries between painting and sculpture. Her practice spans narrative-rich paintings rendered with bold, expressive brushstrokes, and works in which cut-out canvas motifs are pinned and floated in space, creating worlds that exist between the two- and three-dimensional.

This exhibition focuses on her series of ceramic figures that Kubota has been creating since 2018 at Kobei-gama, a historic kiln located in Tajimi, Gifu Prefecture. Established in 1804, Kobei-gama is known as the official kiln that once supplied blue-and-white porcelain to Edo Castle and remains one of the oldest kilns preserving the tradition of Mino ware.

Encouraged by Ryotaro Kato, the eighth-generation master of Kobei-gama, Kubota transformed the figures she had been making for over 27 years in stone powder clay into works in ceramic.
Each piece, imbued with the natural texture of the earth and the serendipitous effects of glaze, embodies a spirit of vitality—celebrating life, playfulness, and freedom. From their cheerful and carefree expressions, we glimpse Kubota’s joyful contemplation of living things.

This marks her first solo exhibition in Tokyo centered on her ceramic figures.
We warmly invite you to experience these spirited works in person.
