Where I Am

Otherwise Gallery presents Where I Am, Karin’s first solo exhibition with the gallery. Alongside her career as a model, Karin has developed her practice as a collage artist, presenting her work across a wide range of fields including advertising, magazines, and artwork for music and film. By layering vivid colors and disparate images, she creates scenes that feel like an extension of reality, yet seem to exist nowhere in particular. In her earlier works, fantastical narratives and imagined worlds often served as starting points for her process. For this exhibition, Karin turns her gaze inward, using her present emotions and the spaces around her as points of departure from which new narratives unfold. Her inner state is reflected more directly than ever across the surface of these works, where the contours of the artist herself overlap with the world she imagines. The exhibition brings together approximately 20 works, including new pieces presented for the first time, recent works, and works that trace the development of her practice to date. Alongside paintings on canvas, the exhibition also features watercolor illustrations and collages, offering a glimpse into where Karin stands today and the new directions her practice is beginning to take. Artist Statement The place I am in now. The things I have chosen along the way. When I hold them close, something strange begins to appear—a space I cannot quite explain. What does it mean to make a painting in order to be here, where I am now? Sometimes, I think I want to become a fish that knows how to swim well. Perhaps because I feel that the act of swimming resembles the process of making my work.
