Masahisa Fukase Exhibition
Mar 23 — Apr 14, 2024
SAI presents "Masahisa Fukase Exhibition," showcasing works from his personal collection.
Starting his career in the early 1960s, Masahisa Fukase became one of the most significant photographers in the history of post-war Japanese photography, with his work spanning from the 1960s to the early 1990s.
His notable achievements include participating in "New Japanese Photography" at the New York Museum of Modern Art in 1974, and the touring exhibition "BLACK SUN: THE EYES OF FOUR" alongside Eikoh Hosoe, Shomei Tomatsu, and Daido Moriyama in 1985-1986, which was showcased at the Modern Art Oxford and the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
Despite an unfortunate accident in 1992 that halted his artistic activities, the reevaluation of his work has intensified since the 2000s, sparking diverse discussions about Fukase's persona worldwide.
Supervised by photographer Masato Seto, who has long served as Fukase's assistant, this exhibition focuses on the city of Tokyo during the 1970s and 1980s as seen through Fukase's eyes, featuring his masterpiece 'RAVENS' among other selected works. On the first day of the exhibition, Masato Seto will be invited to talk about his memories of the precious days spent as Fukase's assistant. Please feel free to visit for this opportunity.
Opened last year in Yoyogi-Hachiman by appointment, the bookstore "Hi Bridge Books" also hosts a pop-up book space during the exhibition period at SAI.
Vintage books and photography collections from Fukase's era, curated by the owner Ms. Takahashi, are available for exhibition and sale.
