ISHII Atsuo - At the Mercy of Three… -
May 26 — Jun 7, 2025
Galerie Tokyo Humanité is pleased to announce ISHII Atsuo's solo exhibition entitled At the Mercy of Three…. Ishii prefers to use travertine and bricks and makes free and humorous sculptures. He made metal sculptures early in his career, stone sculptures in the 1980s, and then started to use bricks in the 2000s. He cut a book A Concise History of Modern Sculpture by an art critic Herbert Read and mixed with mortar to glue bricks. Ring, disk or vessel shape sculptures were made out of those bricks. Ishii shows his strong will to trace the origin of sculpture in his works.
Ishii (b. 1940) studied under TATEHATA Kakuzo (1919-2006), a pioneer of Japanese abstract sculpture, at Tama Art University in the 1960s. He received Teijiro Nakahra Excellent Award in 1992, an award given to outstanding Japanese sculptors, and Shin Hongo Award in 2005, an award given to excellent public art. In 2009, he had a solo exhibition in Yoshitatsu Yanagihara Memorial Galleries of Mie Prefectural Art Museum, Japan.
