KANO Mitsuo　Mirrors and Thunder　Particles and Thunder　Necklace of Thunder

Galerie Tokyo Humanité is pleased to announce KANO Mitsuo’s solo exhibition of previously unexhibited works. Included in this exhibition are 32 encaustic paintings created between 1978 and 1979. These three series titled Mirrors and Thunder, Particles and Thunder, and Necklace of Thunder lay untouched in his studio for over 40 years without ever being exhibited. However, their rich, intense expression possess freshness as if they had just been completed. Kano has been exploring color through encaustic since around his iconic lithograph series Catcher of Lightning in 1977, established rich color emerging from fluctuation in his oil painting first presented in 1980. Kano’s deep fascination with color is evident in the works in this exhibition. Born in 1933, Kano taught himself techniques of intaglio and started his career as an artist in the 1950s. His early works were monochrome intaglio which were considered to be suggestive of plants or living things. In the 1980s, he started to make brightly colored oil paintings along with various print works including metal print, color intaglio, and lithograph. Kano's recent museum exhibitions include The Museum of Modern Art, Hayama (2023, Kanagawa, Japan), Toyama Prefectural Museum of Art & Design (2019, Japan), The National Museum of Art, Osaka (2018, Japan), Center for Contemporary Graphic Art (2017, Fukushima, Japan), and The Museum of Modern Art, Kamakura (2013, Kanagawa, Japan).
